Menopausal Skin

Hi, it’s Dr. Frohar.

Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get nearly enough air time: your skin during menopause.

Yes, we all know about the hot flashes and the mood swings, but no one really tells you that one day your skin suddenly doesn’t feel like your skin anymore.

You wake up and your cheeks feel a bit drier. That glow you used to have? It’s on vacation. You might even start noticing fine lines that weren’t there yesterday. And what’s with the random chin breakouts when you’re well past the teenage years?

I hear this all the time, and I promise you, it’s not just you.

What’s happening is that estrogen, our skin’s longtime best friend, has started to pack up and move out. It’s not personal, it’s hormonal. Estrogen helps keep our skin plump, hydrated, and firm. So when levels dip, the skin thins, it loses elasticity, and you start to see more texture, sagging, dryness, and even itchiness. Some women also experience more sensitivity or the return of skin conditions they haven’t seen in years. Hello, rosacea.

But here’s the thing: your skin isn’t betraying you. It’s just going through its own version of a life transition, and it needs a little extra care. This is the perfect time to simplify, nourish, and support your skin gently.

Start with hydration.
And I don’t mean just chugging water, though please do that too. Be kind with your cleansing. Ditch the harsh foams and try a creamy cleanser. And if retinol or acids feel too aggressive right now, you’re not imagining it. Your skin is more reactive, and you might need to slow things down.

I’m also a big fan of antioxidants. Think vitamin C, niacinamide, green tea, even low-dose retinol, anything that helps your skin fight inflammation and environmental stress. And of course, sunscreen every single day. The rules haven’t changed just because your hormones have.

Now, some women benefit from medical-grade treatments, and that’s where we can personalize things together.

Whether it’s a light microneedling session to boost collagen, IPL treatments to target pigmentation, or prescription creams to calm flare-ups, we’ll find what works best for your changing skin. Even a professional facial for dry or sensitive skin can make a noticeable difference.

There’s no single solution, but there’s always a supportive path forward.

This stage of life is not a decline.
It’s a shift.

And your skin, like the rest of you, is still beautiful, still powerful, and very much worth investing in.

Let’s not just make peace with it.
Let’s make it glow again.
