Dr Powell earned his Medical Doctorate degree from McGill University in 2009, graduating with an Academic “All Canadian” and Dean’s list standing as a Varsity Athlete. He then pursued a 5-year residency training program in Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery within the McGill University Health Centre, during which time he was elected co-Chief Resident involved in academic teaching activities. Dr Powell graduated in 2014, receiving the Resident Teacher of the Year award, and a nomination by the Canadian Dermatology Association for Excellence in Resident Teaching.

Dr Powell subsequently completed an additional year of Fellowship specialty training in Advanced Cutaneous Medical and Aesthetic Therapeutics at McGill University and the University of Toronto. From 2015-2023, Dr Powell practiced in both the community and hospital settings of downtown Montreal,
advocating for patient care, and skin cancer prevention. Dr Powell’s passion for dermatology is evident through his commitment to teaching residents and students as an Associate Professor within McGill University’s Dermatology Residency Program, having been its youngest ever Program Director from 2016-2018. He continues to provide lectures to dermatology residents, and takes part in research activities.

Dr Powell was an exceptional two-time consecutive recipient of the prestigious Canadian Dermatology Association’s Excellence in Clinical Teaching award in 2017 and 2018, and the recipient of McGill Dermatology’s Teacher of the Year award in 2017. McGill further recognized Dr Powell’s impressive early career achievements in the field of dermatology by nominating him for the Young Alumni award in 2019.

Dr Powell joined Clinique Medic Elle in 2018, where he continues to be appreciated by patients as a top-quality physician, delivering a holistic approach, and displaying a high level of professionalism and human compassion. Since January 2024, Dr Powell has initiated a rapid access private (off RAMQ) dermatology clinic specializing in skin cancer screening and general medical and aesthetic dermatology.

Dr Powell regularly advocates for skin cancer screening, informing the public on sun safety and skin care through social media videos (Instagram & Tiktok @mattypowz.md), taking part in voluntary skin cancer screening initiatives such as Melanoma Canada’s Mole Mobile, and guest appearing on several media fronts including Global TV, CJAD and CBC radio, The Gazette newspaper, and Chatelaine magazine. A proud Montrealer, Dr Powell is fluently bilingual, providing medical and aesthetic skin consultations in both English and French, and a wide range of patient-centered medical and aesthetic therapeutics, including surgical, injectable, laser- and energy-based modalities.
